Divorce/separation

If you are going to divorce your spouse or if the tax assessment is in the name of the person who is leaving, this can have consequences for the assessment.

We are going to divorce/separate. What effect will this have on the municipal and water board taxes we have to pay?

Divorce or separation can have consequences for the municipal and water board taxes if the assessment is in the name of the person leaving.

Water board taxes
If the person is moving to another water board, their assessment for the wastewater treatment levy (zuiveringsheffing) will automatically be reduced. You don’t have to do anything for this. Relocation within the water board region will have no effect on the amount of the assessment. The person moving will receive their assessment at their new address as of the following year.

If the assessment is in the name of the person staying behind, this person will usually not receive any reimbursement. They will, however, receive a reduction on the wastewater treatment levy (zuiveringsheffing) if they will be living alone.

Municipal taxes for the municipalities of Delft, Schiedam or Vlaardingen
If the person is moving to another municipality, the user portion (gebruikersdeel) of the sewage levy (rioolheffing) and the waste disposal levy (afvalstoffenheffing) will automatically be reduced. You don’t have to do anything for this. Relocation within your municipality will have no effect on the amount of the assessment. The person moving will receive their assessment at their new address as of the following year. If the assessment is in the name of the person staying behind, this person will usually not receive any reimbursement. They will, however, receive a reduction on the waste disposal levy (afvalstoffenheffing) if they will be living alone.
