The coalition agreement of the Rutte III cabinet stipulates that citizens with debts must be better protected. This is referred to as the ‘approach to problematic debt’. The agreement outlines the following objectives:
- Preventing the accumulation of debts
- Avoiding unnecessary collection costs
- Adjusting legislation and regulations
What does the RBG do about problematic debt?
The RBG aims to assist individuals with debt issues at an early stage and to avoid burdening them with unnecessary enforcement costs. To achieve this, the RBG has initiated an intensive collection process prioritising assistance and the prevention of additional costs.
Reporting to the municipality is essential
Due to current legislation, the RBG is not permitted to proactively contact debt assistance providers or municipalities. Therefore, it is crucial that citizens or businesses with debts report directly to their municipality to receive appropriate support. The RBG refers these individuals to the municipality for further assistance.
